Nationally Recognized for Innovation and Quality Care
The Department of Emergency Medicine at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital has been an engaged leader and contributor to many hospital-wide projects over the years. The Emergency Department has spearheaded multiple initiatives designed to improve the patient experience, patient flow, and the overall quality of the hospital. For example, ED leadership led a clinical effectiveness team to improve the quality of stroke care throughout the hospital. This initiative ultimately led to a Primary Stroke Center certification by The Joint Commission. In 2015, the AHA/ASA awarded Gold Plus and Target: Stroke Honor Roll quality awards to the ED leadership team and to the stroke program.
Many of these quality initiatives have directly contributed to recent hospital accolades and awards, including the following:
- The Leapfrog Group designated Inova Fair Oaks a Top Hospital in 2012 one of only 67 acute-care hospitals in America to receive that designation
- The Leapfrog Group awarded Inova Fair Oaks Hospital a safety grade of A in 2015
- Becker’s Hospital Review included Fair Oaks on its 100 Great Hospitals in America list
- Truven Health Analytics gave the hospital a Top 100 Hospital award two years in a row (2013, 2014)
Physician leaders at VEMA and Fair Oaks have been key partners in broader health system-related initiatives as well. For example, the Fair Oaks leadership team helped devise and execute quality improvement initiatives for Signature Partners, a provider network affiliated with the Inova Health System. Signature Partners, the only clinically integrated network in Northern Virginia, was created to improve quality and affordability in the healthcare system by aligning community physicians, hospital physicians, and hospitals in Northern Virginia. Working with Signature Partners is another way for VEMA physicians to share their expertise and help improve healthcare throughout Northern Virginia.
For years, Inova Fair Oaks emergency physicians have held leadership positions at system-level committees such as the Adult and Pediatric Emergency Services System Teams.

Meet Dr. Chris Mills
VEMA’s Dr. Christopher Mills has worked and researched all over the world. He is currently the Medical Director for the Inova Fair Oaks Emergency Department and has lived in northern Virginia since 2011.
